So you want to build that perfect gaming PC you’ve been dreaming and saving up for? Well, I hope you still have some patience left, because you’ll probably be waiting on your shiny new graphics card for a little while. For the past few weeks, there has been a new shortage of GPUs and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to end anytime soon.

With the recent surge in cryptocurrency this past December, a new surge of crypto miners has been purging major retailers shelves of their precious graphics cards. The reason being is that in order for them to mine that digital gold, they need a beefy computer to do so, which in turn jacks up the prices of GPUs. Production of these cards just can’t keep up with the new demand, leaving a lot of non-miners put out and waiting to build or upgrade their PC.

How bad is it?
Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 back in April was as low as $200, but now you can’t even find it through most retailers and prices have gone up to over $500 through 3rd party sellers.

How about the GTX 1080 Ti? It’s commonly around $700 retail but has inflated to $1,000 to $1,700 through 3rd party retailers.

It is disheartening to see such an influence a small market of people are having on GPUs, leaving us gamers out until the demand settles down. However, there does seem to be some light at the end of the tunnel. Nvidia has stated they want to put gamers first and asked retailers to do the same, which will probably not do anything but it’s a good sign of where Nvidia stands. Not only did they stand up for us gamers, but both AMD and Nvidia are planning on releasing a cryptocurrency only graphics card in the near future.

Will this put an end to the surge of graphics cards for us gamers? Will this new demand help manufacturers in the future develop better cards? Or will this all be meaningless news in 6 months when bitcoin and the others burst into nothingness? Find out next time!
